Northland College Principal's Report

KAIKOHE, Sat. (Sp.).—Roll of the Northland College is 201, of which 115 are boys, according to the monthly report of the principal (Mr N. P. Pitcaithly) presented to the last committee meeting. Courses were attended as folows:—

General and academic, 60; engineering, 39; agriculture, 34; commercial, 30; homecrafts, 26; carpentry, 11. The hostel roll stood at 52. Additional to this number, all but a few of whom it was thought would be returning next year, there were 26 bookings for 1948.

Mr W. S. Bowie had been appointed as a relieving assistant, replacing Miss E. Creedon, who left at the -'end of the second term to go to the Avondale Technical High School.

Two teams had been entered in the Bay of Islands Cricket Association’s competition. Space was cramped at the moment for summer games but notice of intention to take an adjacent property had been gazetted. Experimental work on the farm property, it was hoped, would be started at an early date. Arrangements along these lines had been made with Mr E. H. Arnold, of the Department of Agriculture, Whangarei. Appeals to parents and friends of the college for the general purposes fund had met fair results. It was hoped to augment a supply of books for the library, to buy class sets of text books and to provide further material for summer games. Appreciation was recorded of the invitation issued by the local CAS to attend the recent arts display at the Kaikohe Primary School. Mr J. Thompson, liaison officer to the University of New Zealand, had visited the school inquiring regarding the question of placing Northland College on the list of uinversity entrance examination accrediting schools.

Financial statements for both the schol and hostel showed a satisfactory position. It is likely that the breaking-up ceremony and prize-giving, will be held in the local cinema on December 18. Chairman of the Auckland Education Board (Mr G. K. Hamilton) will be invited to Kaikohe for the ceremony.
