80 in Mt Denby Tourney
A field of 80 teed off at Mt Denby this morning in the first qualifying round of the Whangarei Golf Club’s annual Labour week-end open handicap tournament. In addition, 10 players are taking part in the minor events. The competitors include' a large entry from various Auckland clubs, the best from Whangarei and Whau Valley and representatives of the Waitangi Club.
Lowest handicappers are J. Pelham (Maungakiekie) and L. B. Johnston (Akarana), both of whom play on the scratch mark. The next lowest are E. W. Young (Titirangi) 1, W. J. Glanville, the Whangarei Club champion 2; H. Hedley (Whangarei) 3, G. Tyndal (Manukau), R. J. Crockett (North Shore) 4, Lou .Tones (Orakei), W. A. Campbell (Auckland), R. B. Hardy (Titirangi), W. J. Orr, junr (Whangarei) 5, C. McLeod (Whangarei), N. W. Osmond (Auckland). B. Fairley (Whangarei), M. Adlam (Whangarei). B. A. Kingan (Whangarei) and L. Bennett (Whangarei) G. The links are in splendid order and weather conditions although not promising, were ideal when play started. The second qualifying round was played this afternoon. Match play commences in the morning and two rounds will be decided tomorrow. Semi-finals take place on Monday morning and the final on Monday afternoon. MEDLEY LEADS The Whangarei player, H. Hedley, led the field for the first round with a gross score of 75, which was one below his handicap. Pelham and Young were next with 76 and 77 respectively. Two players reduced their handicaps. They were D. Lees (Akarana), who was reduced two, and C. Hawken (Whangarei), who came down one, after playing two below his handicap. Others to return net figures better than par were G.
