Women's Institutes...
Onerahi Excellent entertainment was provided by members of the Whangarei branch of the Happiness Club when they visited the Onerahi Women’s Institute for the October meeting. Opportunity was taken to invite the older residents of the district and each received a floral spray. The institute president (Mrs Stewart) welcomed the visitors and after a short period of routine business the president of the Happiness Club (Mrs G. Bartlett) compered the programme. The newly-formed Happiness Club choir under the leadership of Mrs Guild, sang several brackets of numbers and two of these, “Little Glow Worm” and “Sweet and Low” (unaccompanied), were repeated by request. Songs were sung by Mesdames McDonald, Guild and Mason. Mrs Mason also sang a further bracket of songs by request Pianoforte solos were played by Mrs '-oward and duets by Mesdames Bartlett W. McKinnon. Mrs Wilding and Mrs McKinnon gave readings. Mrs Thompson on ertained with a humorous recitation and a monologye, and by request repeated Cinders.” Accompanists were Mesdames Bartlett and McKinnon. Oromahoe Maori _At the Oromahoe Maori Institute’s October meeting Mrs Jenkins presided. Two new junior members were welcomed. The institute has received a Maori grant and discussed the spending of the money It was decided to buy material for making women’s and children’s clothing. Mrs Jenkins reported on the half-yearly council meeting in Kaikohe. It was decided to send members to the forthcoming school of demonstrators at Moerewa on November 4. The roll call, "A funny incident,” caused much amusement. *’ Competition results were: Sugar bag cushion (senior), Mrs Yearbury 1, Mrs Komene 2; junior, Miss M. Jenkins 1. Scones (senior), Mrs Utuatonga 1, Mrs Yearbury 2, Mrs Jenkins 3; junior, Miss D. Jenkins 1. Buttonhole (junior), M. Utuatonga and D. Jenkins 1, N. Halliday 2. Chalk pig (senior), Mrs Utuatonga and Mrs Jenkins 1; junior, M. Utuatonga 1, N. Halliday and D. Jenkins 2. It was decided to enter for the Kerikeri Festival Broadwood There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the Broadwood Women’s Institute. Mrs Tulloch and Mrs Lees were present. Mrs Tulloch gave a talk on “Ideals of the W.I. movement and programmes.” Members stood in silence as a tribute to the memory of the late Mrs J. Dyer. A small presentation was made to Mrs Emson in appreciation of her services as secretary. A report on the dance for parcels for Britain and crippled children’s funds showed that both funds benefited considerably The roll call was: “A sick-room hint.” The competition, a baby’s knitted frock, was won by Mrs Nash, Mrs Jones being second. The thought for the month was: “Take from the past all that is good and beautiful, shape your ideals with and build your future on this ideal.” Motukaraka There was a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Motukaraka Women’s Institute. The roll call was: “My silliest mistake in the kitchen.” Competitions were as follow's: Article made from sugar bag, Mrs D. Beazley 1, Mrs Harding 2, Mrs Pearson 3. Bowl of spring flowers, Mrs Beazley 1. Best bloom, Mrs Searle 1, Mrs Armstrong 2. Mrs Beazley senr gave an interesting demonstration on crocheted fascinators. Hostesses were Mrs Muller and Mrs Harding.
Northland Federation The Northland Women's Institute held its bi-annual meeting in the Mangonui hall on October 11. Buses travelled from Ahipara, Kaitaia, Awanui and Victoria Valley, making a record attendance. Mrs L. Sha.ders, Northland Federation presided with Mrs A. Bird as secretary. Mrs Shalders reviewed the year's work The balance sheet was read by the treasurer (Mrs McColl). Reports of 14 individual institutes were given by delegates. Mrs A. Garton retired as the Dominion Councillor and Mrs Shalders was nominated in her place. Luncheon was served by the Mangonui members *who acted as hostesses for the day. In the afternoon Mrs McLeod, of the Dominion executive, who had travelled from Christchurch to attend, gave an interesting address. Members showed their keen interest in their attentive hearing. Mrs R. Wrathall, president of the Mangonui W. 1., presented Mrs McLeod and Mrs Shalders with shoulder sprays and thanked Mrs McLeod for her talk. The exhibition of work was of high standard and was ably judged by Mrs Bob Foster and Miss B. Houston. Results for the silver vase were: Te Puhi W.I. 1 Victoria Valley W.I. 2. Maori section: vvhatuwhiwhi W.I. and Ahipara equal 1, Kenana 3. • Happy Valley The monthly meeting of the Happy Valley Women’s Institute was held at the residence of Mrs E. J. Ogle. The thought for the month was: “Never do unto others what you would not have done to yourself.” The roll call was: “An impromptu speech.” Competitions were: Best bloom, Mrs H. Whittaker 1, Mrs Bindon 2, Mrs N. Ogle 3. Child’s frock, Mrs Bindon 1, Mrs Wattam 2, Mrs E. J. Ogle 3. Guessing the length t>f a rod, Mrs B. Chapman 1, Mrs H. E. Ogle 2. Mrs E. J. Ogle and Mrs Wattam were hostesses. Ma ta pour i The Matapouri Women’s Institute held its monthly meeting on October 15. Mrs Woolley presided over a good attendance. General business and council remits were discussed. Mrs Clements was elected delegate to the council meeting. Mrs Woolley gave the Golden Thrfead on ‘Rewi Alley’s Work in China.” Competition winners for the largest lettuce were Mrs Howe 1, Mrs Coates 2. Mrs Woolley brought the best bloom. The hostesses served afternoon tea, at which Mrs Woolley made a presentation to Miss Morrison in celebration of her 21st birthday. Umawera The thought for the month at the Umawera Women’s Institute meeting was: "Reason ought to be the umpire of all rules.” A debate on “Should women smoke?” took the place of the usual roll call. A vote taken from members not taking part resulted in a win for the negative. Competition winners were: Embroidered supper cloth, Mrs B. Ogle 1, Mrs Brewer 2, Mrs W. Postlewaight 3. Cream puffs, Mrs Carman 1, Mrs Lees 2, Mrs B. Ogle 3.
T utekehua-Omahuta
There was a fair attendance at the monthly meeting of the TutekehuaOmahuta Women’s Institute. The thought for the month was: “Never put off till tomorrow' what can be done today.” The roll call was: “Uses of a lemon.’ Competitions w’ere: Shoulder spray, Mrs E. Cauty 1, Mrs Tulloch 2. Flower bloom, Mrs J. G. Templeton 1, Mrs Auton 2. Lucky number, Mrs J. G. Templeton. As the guest speaker was unable to attend, the afternoon was spent in discussing Women’s Institute matters.
