800 Attend Golfers' Ball

Bringing to a close the round of major social events of the Whangarei season, the Whau Valley Golf Club’s first annual ball, held at the Whangarei Town Hall last night, provided a fitting climax to a succession of most enjoyable functions. Attended by a crowd of at least 800 dancers, the ball was voted one of the best of the year, and considering that this was the first large-scale function organised by the Whau Valley golfers, the success of the evening was all the more meritorious.

From 8.30 p.m. until 1 a.m. the floor was crowded. Dancing space was once again at a premium, testifying to the fact that Whangarei could well do with a more spacious hall for such occasions.

Ces Wright’s band provided excellent fare, with a pleasing variety of modern and old-time tunes, and Mr A. E. Hill’s extras were much appreciated. The blue and white colours of the club were well to the fore in the decorative schemes, with a number of suitably - worded placards, bearing quips and the names of various well- , known Northland and Auckland golf clubs, spaced, around the perimeter of the hall. AIR OF JOLLITY The stage decorations, arranged by Mrs W. W. Logan, were outstanding. She had utilised an abundance of arum lilies, a number of them tinted pink, to give a striking and beautiful effect. An excellent supper, dispensed by the ladies' ball committee, with Mesdames C. Butler and D. Smith in charge, included a number of savouries and other delicacies. Eight sittings of about 100 each were required. The frocking, as has been the case at most similar events this year, was most attractive, with rich-coloured velvets, sequin studded, both popular and becoming. Several strapless gowns and some with just one strap were admired, with a number of Jersey silks attracting attention and envy. , Evening dress predominated among the men folk.

An air of jollity pervaded the hall from the first dance onwards, and as the crowd grew, so did the festive mood.

It was a great success, and the Masters of Ceremonies, Messrs N. Smith and R. A. McLaren, contributed their full share towards the evening’s enjoyment.
