More Hours On Wharves

Wharves Congested

(.Special) AUCKLAND. This Day. Severe port congestion on the Auckland waterfront has caused several Auckland shipping companies to suggest that the Government should declare emergency periods under such conditions.

The companies consider that hours of work during weekdays should be extended from 9 p.m. to 10 p.m., and that meal hours should be worked on a relief basis. They also ask that Saturday work should be extended from noon to 5 p.m. and that Sunday work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. should be introduced.

Officials with many years’ experience on the Auckland waterfront, stated yesterday that they could not recall another occasion in the past quarter of a century when so many ships waited at anchor over so long a period. This included delays through industrial disputes, as well as normal' shipping influxes, and covered the war period with its large convoys. The stream has not been clear of ships at anchor since September 16. more than three weeks ago. This morning three ships were waiting for berths apd the last of the three is not likely to berth until late next week. Jn the meantime other vcsels will join the waiting' queue.
