Dominions Population Up 66,000 Last Year

(Special) WELLINGTON, This Day. THE population of New Zealand increased 66,685 in 1946, says the annual report of the Department of Health. The population in 1946 was 1,761.399, consisting- of 1,659,145 Europeans and 102,254 Maoris.

Registered live births in New Zealand in the past year were the highest ever recorded in the country's history, according to the report. The European infant mortality rate also reached a new low record. The report states that the number cf registered live births was 47,£47. European births numbered 41,871 and Maorr births 577 C. The birth rate was 25.24 per thousand for European, and 56.49 per thousand for Maoris. The European rate was the highest since 1917. The infant mortality rate was 26.10 per thousand births for Europeans and 74.62 for Maoris. The deaths per thousand were 9.7 for Europeans, and 15.1 for Maoris.
