New Pedestrian Crossings Required
Recommendations to the Whangarei Borough Council for provision of additional pedestrian crossings in Whangarei were carried at a general meeting of the Whangarei Borough Ratepayers’ Association last night. Mr H. R. Barton suggested that a crossing was urgently needed at the Kensington corner, which was a very busy area, with a large number of elderly persons and children crossing the road. He suggested that the crossing be from McFarlane’s shop across to the petrol station. Mr A. W. Adams suggested a crossing near the Regent, across Bank Street from Shipman’s shop across to Timewell and Kings. A further recommendation to the council, proposed by Mrs L. G. Pointon, was that white lines should be painted’ in the centre of Dent Street from Bank Street extending past the fire station into Norfolk Street.
This was a very dangerous portion of the roadway, said Mrs Pointon and something *of this nature was required to assist both the fire brigade, which has to use the road wffeii answering an alarm, and also private motorists.
All the recommendations were carried.
