Boy Safe While Search Went On

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, This Day. While fears were held for his safety, and police and coastguard launches searched Rangitoto Channel for him last night, Thomas Lewis, aged 16, was asleep in a hut on Rangitoto Island. He left Torbay Beach, near his home, in a dinghy, to row to Rangitoto at 9 a.m., and when he did not return by 5 p.m. the podice were advised. A launch party searched Rangitoto without success.

The boy returned today, landing at Belmont.

He said he realised he could not return before darkness, because of the tide, and spent the night in a hut, where he found blankets. He ate a record breakfast on his return.
