Canada To Export Radio Isotopes
(Rec. 2 p.m.) OTTAWA, Sept. 4. The reconstruction Minister (Mr Howe) said today that the heavy water atomic energy pile at Chalk River, Ontario, was producing radio isotopes in quantity, and that they will be available for sale to foreign countries.
Mr Howe told a Press conference that the Canadian atomic oven had been very successful, and was twice as large as Britain's low energy pile, placed in operation in August.
Mr Howe said Canada would not sell any plutonium, as that was “the guts of the whole thing—the stuff they make atomic bombs with.”
Dean Mackenzie, president of the National Research Council, said Canada plans to release radio isotopes to experimental workers in agriculture, and these may revolutionise agricultural production throughout the world. For instance, they would enable reseachers to determine the exact amount of fertiliser needed.
