Whoragoroa Selects Its Country Queen
(Special) KAEO, This Day. A gala .atmosphex-e prevailed in the Kaeo Hall when the wind-up dance for Whangaroa’s country queen carnival was held. Excitement and interest ran high as progress results of the voting for the queens were posted on the stage. At ll p.m., the ballot boxes for the three qfieens—Sports, Miss Joy Hayes; Country, Miss Dawn Ogle; Maoiff, Mrs Rakena Hemi—wei-e closed and votecounting started.
At midnight the results were given, the Counti-y queen winning with a total of 56,164 votes. Next was the Sports queen with 44,825 votes, while the Maori queen polled 5767 votes. The winning queen’s supporters had raised the excellent sum of £7Ol/1/-. The Sports followers contributed £560/6/3, while the Maori total was £72/1/10.
The Maoi'i queen was entei’ed late in the contest and the peculiar nature of her difficulties with small and scattei'ed communities was another major factor operating against her success. The grand total of money raised was £1334/9/2.
