£2700 For Maintaining Parks
New Plymouth had been quoted for its acreage of parks but he had inquired there and learned that some oi the parks were a liability. The grant for maintenance of Whangarei parks this year was £2700, which would pay for little more than wages. Cr W. L. McKinnon considered that the leader had given totally wrong information.
He thought the council had been wrong in its decision, as he had stated at the time, and he still held to that opinion.
Cr Johnson said his criticism was of the leader and not the report, no mention having been made in the leader to Mr McKillop’s statement about the loss of houses.
The Mayor said he had no objection in the world to any newspaper making any comment if the facts were true. He had been 37 years in public life and had never written to the newspapers once because he -lived above them.
“They can publish two leaders: a week for the next six months on me and I won’t lose any sleep,” the Mayor concluded. The discussion then lapsed.
