Farm implements From Great Britain
(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. The research officer of the Federated Farmers of New Zealand (Mr D. L. M. Martin) yesterday questioned the lecently-published remarks of Mr H E. Dawson, acting-secretary of the New Zealand Agricultural Implement Manufacturers' Federation, that "imports of implements from tire United Kingdom were almost, if not complete- 1 ly, out of the question at the moment.’'
Mr Martin said that official statistics of the United Kingdom Ministry of Agriculture disclosed that in 1946 Britain exported 8687 agricultural wheeled tractors, compared with 6616 in 1938; 3455 ploughs compared with 572, and 4148 disc harrows compared with 576.
If New Zealand could only obtain a small percentage of the agricultural tractors and implements that England was exporting at present the shortage of farm machinery, which the New Zealand manufacturers contended had resulted from the curtailment of shipments of steel and other raw materials for processing in the Dominion, would be alleviated.
