Transit Housing For P And T Employees
Owing to the existing housing position in Whangarei the Post and Telegraph Department has found is necessary to embark upon a transit housing scheme to accommodate employees desperately in need of accommodation.
This information was given the Borough Council last night in a letter from the chief postmaster, who stated that it had been decided to erect a number of units on two sections in Stanley Street acquired from the State Housing Department. Suitable buildings had been secured from the War Assets Realisation Board. Now located at Auckland, they would be used only while the present housing position existed. In other centres the department had converted similar buildings and the local authorities had been quite satisfied with the standard of accommodation provided. The engineer (Mr I. A. Cromie) reported that the department was erecting three Army buildings which would contain nine transit housing units. The erection of the buildings was contrary to the by-laws but the state was not required to obtain permits. The legal and finance 'committee’s recommendation that the information should be received was adopted.
