Support Any North Fertiliser Works

(0.C.) RUAKAKA, This Day. Any efforts made to obtain a fertiliser works for Northland, irrespective of the site chosen, will be supported by the Ruakaka Branch Federated Farmers.

This was decided at a well-attended meeting presided over by Mr W. Johns on Monday night.

Speakers believed that some delegates associated with the movement for a works, took the attitude that Whangarei was not the most suitable location and if the works were not established in a more northern locality they did not wish to see a works at all.

This was to be deplored as any works erected in Northland must result in better fertiliser service for farmers. WITHDRAW AIL OF SUBSIDY The chairman said he had been informed that the New Zealand fertiliser manufacturers had frozen supplies' pending the results on the decision to remove the subsidy. It was stated that many farmers within easy reach of the works had already collected and paid for their quotas personally from the works. Most farmers had already submitted their orders for this season's fertiliser at the 1946 price and. in the opinion of one member, it would be a breach of contract if the price on these undelivered orders was increased.

Already a number of farmers have requested that their orders be held in abeyance pending a decision as to price. Members fear that many orders will be canceled or reduced considerably. ROAD MAINTENANCE

Questioned regarding the remit from Whangarei Heads branch requesting that “Whangarei County Council be abolished,’’ Mr H. E. Hewlett said that if the suggestion had been that county councils throughout New Zealand should be abolished and their functions taken over by the state, it may have been considered logical, but why pick on Whangarei ? Rates must inevitably increase considerably if roads .were to be at all usable unless a big sum from petrol and tyre tax was allocated to county councils for urgent maintenance and bridge renewal, the costs of which were enormous today. DAIRY COMPANY AFFAIRS Several matters concerning Whangarei dairy company directorate and administration were discussed and are to be taken up by Mr Hewlett, who is a director of the company. One point was that where two or more cans are sent it Ms impossible under the system in vogue to trace the grading of any particular can. One supplier suggested that, if tare weights of cans were placed on dockets, as was done in many factories, it would be easier to trace the identity of each can. SUB-PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVE Mr Hewlett having been elected a sub-provincial vice-president, Mr J. Newton was appointed a further delegate from the branch with Mr C. T. Flyger, deputy. Mr Newton requested that more branch members should attend subproviricial meetings. They were always welcome and could take par' in discussions, but not vote. The experience gained would fit them for office as future delegates. Most new delegates were amazed at the volume and diversity of the business coming forward at sub-provincial meetings.said Mr Johns. Mr Hewlett said that, in view of the number of remits which had to be deferred for lack of time the new subprovincial president (Mr O. Pocock) had stated that it might be necessary to hold an interim meeting to clean up some of the outstanding business, as it was not conducive to branch harmony to have important remits deferred for months.
