U.S. Labour Will Use Ballot, Not Strikes

(Rec. 11 a.m.) NEW YORK. Sept. 1

“Labour will fight its enemies not with ill-considered strikes, but with the ballot.” declared Mr William Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, addressing a Labour Day mass meeting. He warned labour not to arouse a spirit of retaliation in attacking the Taft-Harlley Labour Act and other anti-labour laws, but rather “for its own good and the country’s welfare unions must keep production going at full blast and the wheels of industry moving without serious interruption.” Mr Green said labour’s election year platform would include: (1) A reduction of exorbitant prices to bring the cost of living to a reasonable level.

(2) Full employment with decent standards of living. (3) A broad housing programme of acceleration of the construction of millions of new comfortable homes.

(4) Increased minimum wage. (5) Stronger social security laws to prevent workers being cast on the scrap heap in old age and forced to take a pauper’s dole.
