lost Europeans In India Are Leaving

(Special) AUCKLAND, This Day, Most of the European residents of India desired to leave, said travellers who arrived by the steamer Narboda, from Calcutta yesterday. In Calcutta alone about 2000 were waiting for ships. Most were going to Britain, but recently 4000 had gone to Australia. A number of those in the Narboda intend to settle in New Zealand. Mr G. R. Marshall, who was employed by the British India Steam Navigation Company in Calcutta, has come to an appointment with the Union Steam Ship Company as assistant repair superintendent at Auckland. His wife and three children accompanied him.

Mr Marshall had a narrow escape when his car was stoned by a mob last year, but although the car was damaged he managed to drive it through the gates of a hospital. Mr S. M. Knowles arrived on leave from his position as a pilot on the Hoogly River at Calcutta. He has spent 25 years in India, but said he was certain to stay in New Zealand if he could find suitable employment here. He is going to Hamilton. A resident of India most of his life, Mr L. C. Leicester, with three other members Of his family, said that the whole family was coming to live in New Zealand. Several were already living in Palmerston North and Wellington. Mr Leicester was employed by an English company in Calcutta. An employee of the Indian Government railways, Mr D. R. Carr, arrived with his wife and small daughter, on leave, but he also wishes to settle here. He has spent 10 years in India. Most of the party thought the present disturbances would almost certainly spread to the rest of India, the present being only a taste of what was to come.
