City Walks Over Takahiwai, 37-0

LEAGUE

Aided and abetted magnificently by Jimmy Stringfellow, City, from start to finish, outplayed Takahiwai in the most one-sided Rugby League game played at Jubilee Park, Whangarei, this season. Takahiwai was like clay in the hands of the potter Stringfellow scored three tries and made openings for at least three more. Hollows was well marked, and it was only towards the end that he managed, after several attempts, to score a try. His first attempt was foiled in rather a humorous way. He was attacked by an opponent, who proceeded to bring Hollows down by lifting him up. With his hands round Hollows' foot a Takahiwai player elevated Reg. who eventually released the ball.

City then started its walkover tactics. Stringfellow started a run, passed to Plollows, who in turn sent on to J. Rice, to Barker, who crossed Takahiwai’s line for the first try. From a scrum the ball came to halfback Truman. Stringfellow took possession from the blind side and notched dirt for City’s second try. Donaldson converted.

The field was sloppy, and although Takahiwai had the wind behind it in the first half, it booted not, and City just kept piling on the points. STONEWALL DEFENCE

Truman got the ball, passed to Tubby Munro. Jack Chetham came up fast, could not make up his mind which man to tackle, and missed Munro, who cut inside him and passed to Doug. Brown, playing his first game at Jubilee Park after returning from Japan. Brown went over, making the score City l], Takahiwai 0. i

Takahiwai then advanced deep into City's territory until stopped two feet from the line. Hollows, Wells, P. Donaldson and Davidson were splendid on defence, repelling three strong attacks. R. Paki did manage to get over the goal-line with half a dozen on top of him. The trouble was several other Takahiwai players crossed when Paki did. so that no try was allowed. After all the Takahiwai line had handled. Chetham. after a run in which his fend was well to the fore, was almost across. At half-time, when Chetham. injured, was replaced by B. Rata, the score was 11—0 in City's favour. Paki played the ball right into Stringfellow’s hands. That was enough, and City added three more points. FLOW OF TRIES Soon after this Stringfellow intercepted a pass, ran about'half the length of the field, saw trouble coming, and passed to Rice, who crossed between the posts. Donaldson again converted. Passing movements yielded tries for Donaldson and Stringfellow. Donaldson converting both. P. Donaldson, about to cross Takahiwai’s line again, was recalled for a knock-on and a five-yards scrum was ordered. Wells got the ball, passed to Stringfellow,- who gave it to Hollows. He passed to Brown, who crossed for the second time. Donaldson converted just before the whistle, making the final score City 37, Takahiwai 0.
