Auckland Scout’s Cycling To Waipoua
Three Auckland schoolboys, all members of the Ist Birkenhead Scout troop arrived at Whangarei on Wednesday afternoon on a cycle journey to Waipoua Forest. They are J. B. F. Creagh; 15. of the Auckland Boys’ Grammar School, W. Simpson, IG, and S. Taylor, 14. of Northcote College. Creagh and Taylor are also sea j scouts.
Main reason for the boys’ journey is to find camp sites at the forest for use by older members of the troop who intend camping at Waipoua during the Christmas holidays. Leaving Auckland on Monday morning the scouts reached Warkworth. where they spent the night in their tent which they carry with them. Strong headwinds and rain had prevented them from covering a greatter distance the first day. CARRY ALL THEY NEED On Tuesday the trio left Warkworth and travelled to Kaiwaka, making the trip from there to Whangarei. They spent Wednesday night in the rover scouts’ den behind the residence of the Whangarei Boy Scouts’ District Commissioner, Mr L. E. Philpott. Yesterday they climbed Parahaki and took photographs, while this afternoon rover scout Murray j Jones, of Whangarei, took them on a] tour of the town. !
Today the boys hiked to Dargaville where they will remain two days before leaving for Waipoua. They will remain at Waipoua a day after which they will travel down the west coast to Maungaturoto, and then to Auckland.
The boys carry no primus stove, but light their own fires, cook their own meals, and in fact carry everything they need with them, buying bread and meat when required. “We just keep going if it rains—we’ve got oilskins,” one of the boys said.
