Bloodshed In India

The departure of British troops from India, and the transfer to Indians of responsibility for the maintenance of law and order, have been marked by distressing outbreaks of racial barbarity in the Punjab, which has been made the dividing line between Pakistan and India.

According to the New Delhi correspondent of the Sydney Morning Herald, the Governments of Pakistan and India are faced, 13 days after being granted Dominion status, with a situation rivalling in bloodshed the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

The presence of antagonistic

nationalities in the border areas of the truncated Punjab has resulted ;n dreadful bloodshed, which, unless stopped quickly, will produce the chaotic conditions/ many people feared would prevent- India from enjoying the liberty and self-deter-mination offered by Britain when she declared her determination to hand India to the Indians to shape their own course.

Reports state that the whole frontier area is ablaze, and it needs little imagination to sense a critical situation with which the leaders of the two Dominion Governments must deal resolutely yet diplomatically.
