Sowings of most vegetables may be made. It is early yet to sow pumpkins, marrows etc. These, however, may be sown under glass for planting out later.

The sowing of French and other halt hardy beans must depend on weather conditions. They like a comparatively warm soil, and once they have germinated, Ihey don’t like a cheek in the form of a cold spell. By the middle of September they should be safe

to sow. An earlier sowing may be made with more risk. Parsnips should be sown early as they like a.moist soil for germination. Make successive sowings of pens and spinach.

Rhubarb roots should be put out with a:; little delay as possible. Give the bed any amount of animal manure or compost with a liberal dressing of super and bonedust. Cabbages may be planted out: They will make good headway as the soil gets warmer.

Plant onions. The soil should be and firm at time of planting. Put out a few tomato plants in a sheltered sunny position. Also sow seed in boxes for later planting. Finish all pruning of fruit trees without delay. Clean by lightly digging, and manure about fruit trees. Spread the manure out as far as the branches reach Collect and burn all fallen leaves and prunings: or the leaves may be used for composting. After a burn use the ashes for top-dressing: but see that they are kept dry until used. Spray peaches and nectarines for leaf-curl. Use lime-sulphur solution, one in 120. Or Bordeaux may be used. Use the hoe freely now. and so save a lot of trouble later.
