SHARP QUAKES ON EAST COAST

(P.A.) GISBORNE, This Day. Several jolting earthquakes, the worst of which occurred about 2 a.m., were felt in Gisborne district early this morning. , . . ~ Worst effects were in the vicinity of Matawai and Motu where several chimneys were damaged and jars and ornaments were dislodged from shelves. Rumblings preceded the shocks. Chimneys fell in Matawai. Others were damaged in Motu, requiring demolition. A hot water cistern in one Matawai house was badly damaged. In Gisborne and the East Coast there was a quake of a swaying nature but no damage was reported.
