MORE BLOODSHED WHILE UNO DEBATES
INDONESIAN FAILURE
(Received noon) NEW YORK, August 22. IN a new effort to obtain United Nations action in Indonesia, Colonel Hodgson (Australia) gave notice in. the Security Council today of a motion for the appointment of a three-nation arbitration commission—one member of the commission to be chosen by the Dutch, the second by the Indonesians and the third by the Security Council.
The Australian move followed another fruitless debate on the Indonesian conflict.
It is now three weeks since the council issued the cease-fire order and it is still debating whether to appoint observers to report on how its wishes are being carried out. Efforts to draft one acceptable compromise resolution out of the motions moved by Australia, China and Poland have failed. iIt is reported today that the United States, having withdrawn its offer of
“good offices,” will now support direct United Nations intervention in Indonesia, possibly along the lines proposed by Australia.
The Dutch delegate (Dr van Kleffens) told the council today that its efforts to end the conflict had been a dismal failure. Bloodshed had actually increased since the cease-fire order were issued because of the Republicans’ actions. He urged the council to drop the subject and allow the Netherlands Indonesia to settle their own differences.
