Should JCC Nominate Local Body Members ?
The question of whether the Whangarei Junior Chamber should nom[inate a representative for the forthcoming local body election was again raised at the monthly meeting of the chamber last night. Was there a member of the junior chambcv capable of qualifying for a position on the Borough Council? asked Mr N. Hill. The person nominated had to be experienced in local body affairs. The national executive of the junior chamber felt that individual chambers should not nominate members from their own', ranks for local uody representatives, but rather that young members should take an interest in local body affairs, said the ires Li mr. (Mr R. Salmon). “GET OUT AND VOTE”
There were few members who were able to take up the position and be tied to the policy of the junior chamber. “We should not be critical of the mayoralty or present councillors,” said Mr Salmon. It was decided that it would be more advisable to organise a “get out and vote” campaign rather than nominate representatives. The motion was instigated by Mr Rod McCorquodale. Mr Hill described the motion as an excuse to “pigeon-hole” the question.
