Men On Trial Ask For Bigger Rations
(11.30 a.m.) HAMBURG. July 4. Gestapo men on trial for killing escaping British and Dominion airmen today handed to the presiderit of the court a slice of bread wrapped in a newspaper which they said was their daily bread ration. The president said the defendants’ food was definitely insuffeient foremen under strain of trial and he would recommend an increase.
Hans Merten i a prosecution witness, described how General Nebe, head of the German civil police administration, chose the names of officers who were to be shot.
Merten, who was an official in Nebe’s office, said Nebe told him to examine the officers’ personal cards.
Nebe then looked the cards over and commented on one of them: “Oh, he is too young, he should live,” and of another card he said: “He is married, but has no children. He must be one of them to die.”
Merten said Nebe went over all thp •officers’ cards because a list of officers who were to be sjdot ,had to be submitted to the Gestapo chief (Kaltenbrunner).
