Values Unchanged At Northland Stock Sales
LATE rates prevailed at stock sales held throughout Northland during the past week. No fluctuations of any significance occurred. The substantial disparity between values of dairy cows and heifers sold in the yards and at clearing sales remained pronounced.

At clearing sales, choice close up cows made to £24 and heifers sold to £2O.
The demand for Quality dairy cows and heifers close to profit remained firm and anything close to profit met keen competition. Backward and inferior sorts were harder to quit but in odd cases they made quite good money. Prices for yearling heifers were steady, average quality lines realising about £4/10/- to £4/15/-. In the paddocks heavy prime bull* ocks made from £l7 to £l9. Good quality ox beef was quoted at £2/10/to £2/12/- per 1001 b., and cow beef at £l/18/6 to £2/2/- for best quality. Boners realised schedule rates at £l/6/- per 1001 b. Fewer fat pigs were penned, values remaining firm. A stronger inquiry for fat sheep was noted and private sales of prime wethers were made at £2/5/-. Forward conditioned wethers and good hoggets sold at slightly improved rates.
With the exception of dairy sections, the stock markets were generally quiet. This inactivity was attributable to the slack period of the season and was accentuated by the inclement weather conditions which ruled for the greater part of the week.
The New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Co. Ltd. conducted a clearing sale on account of Mr W. Thomas, Peria. where the herd came forward in only fair condition to a medium attendance of local buyfcrs. The vendors were Messrs J. Vinac. T. Vinac and J. Pribivecich. Best cows. August calvers. made £ll/10/- to £l2/10/-; medium cows £9/5/- to £11; poorer sorts £7 to £B/15/-; heifers, £10; heifer calves £4/17/6. Walter Wakeiin Ltd. and Alfred Buckland and Sons - Ltd. conducted clearing sales on account of Mrs V. H. Purcell (Sherwood Rise) and Mr N. Horrobin (Tikipunga).
At Mrs Purcell’s sale the cattle met keen competition, which was maintained throughout, the top-priced cow selling for £2O. The sound cows averaged £l6. Springing heifers sold to £2O and a line of yearling heifers offered on account of another client realised £6/10/-. A large number of buyers attended Mr Horrobin’s sale where the toppriced cow made £22/15/-. The herd, which came forward in good' condition, averaged £l7/1/-. Twoyear springing Jersey heifers sold to £l3 and a line of 102 hoggets made £l/6/8.
In conjunction with Walter Wakeiin Ltd. and Alfred Buckland and Son Ltd., the North Auckland Farmers’ Coop. Ltd. reported on a clearing sale conducted on account of Mr H. Symons, Poroti.
In spite of the inclement weather, a fair number of buyers attended and competition for good quality cows was keen. The average realisation for the 86 sound cows was £l4/8/-. Quotations were: Best quality cows, close up and in milk, £2O to £24; other good cews £ls to £2O; July and Aug. calvers £l4 to £l7: aged and backward £9/10/- to £ll/5/-; good quality 2-ycar springing Jersey heifers £l2 to £l3/10/-; backward and smaller heifers. £7/7/6; pedigree Jersey bulls 15 to 21 guineas; grade Jersey bulls. £lO.
