Hospital Porter To Study Art In Paris

(P.A.) WELLINGTON, This Day. A former street photographer, Mr Sam Cairncross, who is now employed as a porter at the Wellington Hospital, expects to leave shortly for France, where he will undertake a year’s study in the art schools of Paris.

This is made possible by the award to New Zealand for the first time this year of two bursaries by the French Government. The other oursar will be a secondary school teacher of French. Nominations were forwarded to France earlier this year by the French Minister to New Zealand (M. Armand Gazel), who is awaiting formal con-, firmation of them from his Government. As an artist, Mr Cairncross has established a reputation for his exuberant use of colour. He is not an academic painter, but his work greatly impressed Madame Gazel, who has commissioned him to do a portrait of her son Joel, now studying in an American university.
