Commute Sentences
Terrorists Warn
(Rec. 11 a.m.) JERUSALEM, June 17. Irgun Zvai Leumi today distributed, pamphlets in Tel Aviv warning the authorities that it would give them only a few days to commute the death sentences on the three terrorists concerned in the Acre prison break. The Stern gang, in a message to the United Nations Committee on Palestine. said:
“Unless the British are called upon to respect the United Nations appeal for truce we shall be compelled to adopt the most drastic measures.” When Zionists referred to Palestine they excluded Transjordan from Jewish claims; the head of the Jewish Agency’s Washington department (Mr Moshe Shertok) told the United Nations Special Committee on Palestine at its first public session today. He denied that Jewish land purchases in Palestine had created a class of landless Arabs. JEWISH-ARAB COOPERATION All Arabs whose land was bought by jews were resettled elsewhere. It was impossible for Jews to be integrated among Arabs in the same way as conditions compelled them to be in other countries. Giving examples of Jewish-Aras cooperation, Mr Shertok referred to the number of Arabs working under the Jewish mayor in Haifa, joint JewArab control of the Palestine citrus fruit industry, and the recent joint strikes by Jewish and Arab Government military employees. Questioned by the chairman (Judge E. Sandstroem) about Jewish-British cooperation, Mr Shertok said the British White Paper restricting immigration had knocked the cornerstone out of cooperaton.
