£7OOO Customs Haul In Q'land
(11.30 a.m.) BRISBANE, This Day. Customs officers arrested ten young men in city streets, and recoveied 44 strings of artificial pearls which the men were trying to sell. Since Sunday customs officers have seized smuggled goods valued at £7OOO, the biggest haul on record in Queensland.
The pearls were brought ashore from the vessel River Mitta, which arrived from Kure. On board customs men found 2300 artificial pearl necklaces, 320 gut fishing lines, and a talking-film projector. The necklaces would sell for 30/- to £2/10/- each on the black market and the fishing lines for £l. The goods will be auctioned to the public.
