British Rural Exhibition

An exhibition in itself, a display of rural handicrafts from Great Britain will be a major feature at the Whangarei Winter Show. This display, organised by the British Council, London, has already been shown in Hamilton and Auckland.

In Auckland 11,500 people visited the display on opening day. It is expected to arouse considerable interest among the farming community for the duration of the Whangarei season.

The display is a very comprehensive one and comprises all types of horse harness, wrought ironwork for domestic uses, small implements and turnery, Welsh dairy and cookery spoons, knitting and textiles —this portion being very comprehensive—and pottery and basketware making. HOW CRICKET GEAR IS MADE Of interest to sportsmen will be the display "making a cricket bat and ball.”

The various stages in the work of making the bat is shown in nine sepate sections.

Commencing with a piece o-f willow the bat is slowly processed and, in the nine stages, emerges as a comnleted century-scorer. Nothing but glue and a perfect fit hold the handle and the main portion of the bat together. The making of a cricket ball is shown in eight separate stages commencing with the centre or “quilt” of cork and worsted and ending with the fitting of the cover to the quilt. Several similar arts and crafts are dealt with most extensively. The exhibition will be educational and instructive to all.
