Expected To Block

Wool Tax Bill

(Rec. 1.30.) WASHINGTON, June 16. The House of Representatives today endorsed the joint House-Senate conference’s report on the wool tax bill, authorising the President to impose import fees or quotas on foreign wool, provided they did not contravene trade agreements already negotiated.

The House defeated an effort to return the bill to the conference with instructions that it be rewritten. The measure now goes to the Senate. Reuter says approval of the bill by the Senate is virtually certain, but President Truman is expected to exercise his veto. This was implied by the Demo-

cratic House leader (Mr Sam Rayburn), who told the House that the Administration remained unalterably opposed to the bill in its present form. Mr Rayburn attended a meeting with Mr Truman at the White House today at which the bill was discussed with other Congressional leaders. He said that if the measure was adopted reciprocal trade negotiations at Geneva would be destroyed.
