Worsham Wins U.S. Open Champ.

(Rec.. 11.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 15. Lew Worsham, of Pennsylvania, won the American open golf championship today when his opponent, Sam Snead, missed a short putt at the 18th hole of the play-off round necessitated by their tie yesterday. Scores were: Worsham 69. Snead 70. They were all-square at the 18th tee. Snead was 18ft from -the hole in two and his putt stopped 30iin. from the hole. Worsham’s third shot was a chip which bounced out of the cup and stopped an inch nearer the hole than Snead’s. Snead missed his putt and Worsham sank his. THRILLING CLIMAX Critics describe the play-off as one of the most thrilling climaxes in the championship’s history. Worsham’s 69 was his best round of the tournament, but he was never ahead of Snead until the dramatic last green when the two balls seemed equidistant from the hole. Worsham asked for a measurement when Snead had to putt first and missed.

He disgustedly threw the ball off the green. . Worsham, who was virtually unknown before the championship, is aged 29. He served in the United States Navy during the war. This was the second time Snead has lost an open championship which he appeared to won. In 1939 he was leading until the 72nd hole where he took eight stiokes. The defending titleholder, Lloyd Mangrum. was well down the list, with 293. Bobby Locke announced he was too fatigued to travel to England for the British open and would lemain in the United States until September.
