Truman's Charges

President Truman has signed the measure ratifying the peace treaties with Italy, Hungary, Rumania and Bulgaria. In a statement accompanying the signing, Mr Truman charged the Governments of Hungary, Rumania ana Bulgaria with oppressing the people of those countries. He said :

“I feel I must publicly express regret that the Governments of those countries not only have disregarded the will of the majority of the people, but also have resorted to measures of oppression against them." Governments representative of the people did not exist in those countries but it was in the interests of their peoples to terminate the state of war which had existed between their Governments and the United States for more than five years.
