Huddersfield Pay Australian £I3OO
(Rec. 12.30 p.m ) SYDNEY, This Day. Known as Australia’s greatest Rugby League footballer, Pat Devery has accepted an offer from the Huddersfield Club and will fly to England at the end of the present Sydney season. Devery has obtained the highest terms ever granted to an Australian player. He will receive £ 1300, tax free, for a three-year contract, plus £7 for each match won, £6 for a draw, and £5 for a loss. He will also be found a position as a school teacher and will be provided with free air travel each way.
Devery has already mailed his registration forms to the Huddersfield Club and has notified officials of his club that he has decided to sign the contract when it is forwarded. At Huddersfield he will join two other Australian players, “poached” last year—the winger Lionel Cooper, and the fullback Johnny Hunter. The selectors planned to build an Australian team around Devery to send to England next year. He is accounted one of the greatest five-eighths Australia has produced, and was sure to be captain of the Australian team.
