Winter Arrives In Far North

(Special.) KAITAIA, This Day. Winter struck the Far North in no uncertain terms when a cold and boisterous south-west storm swept Kaitaia and district early on Thursday morning and continued for the next 24 hours.

Throughout Thursday afternoon and evening the wind maintained gale force, with several heavy showers, totalling 1.05 in of rainfall for the 24 hours ended yesterday morning. Electrical disturbances were evident on both Wednesday and Thursday, but these were not severe, although causing some damage to electrical installations. particularly, in the Takahue district, where several fuses blew out. 'Cases of broken transmission wires were also reported.

The telephone system was not affected and no road damage was reported, although a few days previously there was a road blockage in the Fern Flat area, east 'of Mangonui County. To date this month, Kaitaia has had 3.90 in of rain, all within the past week, and the total for the year so far is 16.97 in. compared with 2a.99in for the same period last year.
