SPLIT RAIL DELAYS EXPRESS Because of a split rail at Tauraroa, the express from Auckland yesterday was delayed tor nearly two hours. A rail from Waiotira was used to repair the line, and the express arrived at Whangarei at 4.7 instead of 2.15p.m.. The express left ten minutes later for Opua. The split rail was reported before the express was due by men working on the line.

BAND DONATION A donation of ,£2/2. - was made by the Whangarei County Council to the Whangarei County Pipe Band. In a letter seeking the contribution the band’s secretary (Mr F. L. Morgan) stated that the band had paraded on 39 occasions in the past year. TIMBER CARTING RESTRICTED All timber carting on Whangarei county roads is to cease between June and October, with the exception of certain loads over specified roads, for which the Whangarei County Council may grant special permission. This was decided by the County Council at. its monthly meeting yesterday, alter Cr M. W- Wilson related how certain roads in his riding were being damaged by the passage of heavy timoer trucks. Other councillors reported similar occurrences in their ridings.

HAMILTON MUSICAL COMPETITIONS The Second Annual Festival of the Hamilton Competitions Society is to be held in Hamilton from August 23 to September 3. Special prizes include £SO for lugnest aggregate average marks. The winner ot the Grand Opera Aria Vocal Scholarship (open to ladies and gentlemen) will be awarded one year's free tuition at the N.S.W. State Conservatorium of Music and will include a special course in theory and lirst-class return fare between New Zealand and Australia. This prize is worth approximately £l6O. 243
