N.Z. Spent £ 5 79,000 On Hiring Movie Films

(From Our Special Correspondent) WELLINGTON, This Day. NEW ZEALAND’S overseas income last year was just over £18,000,000 in excess of its overseas payments, despite a big rise in the value of imports—£69,669,ooo compared with £36,139,000 in the previous year—though these figures do not take into account higher prices which have restricted the Volume of goods provided for the money.

The excess of overseas income over payments for the year ended March 31, 1945, was £37,561,000 and in 1945 (to March 31) £5.726,000 when the payments included £22,721,000 to the British Government on account of the war financing arrangement under a Memorandum of Security. RESERVE BANK FIGURES How the Dominion’s annual income from overseas to March 31, 1947, is analysed by the Reserve Bank, which gives these items:— £. Exports 112,911,000 Interest dividends, legacies, immigrants’ funds, repatriated capital and private debts due in N.Z 14,459,000 Trade debts due in N.Z., including overseas earnings of N.Z. firms 5,478,000 Commissions, royalties, and insurance -546,000 Donations and allowances . 481,000 Travellers’ expenses 624,000 American authorities and personnel 3,593,000 Receipts by High Commissioner in London 10,278,001) Total £ 148,369,000 LARGEST PAYMENTS The largest overseas payments were in respect of imports, excluding Government goods. State debt and other services, including imports of goods accounted for £44,389,000, while local body debt services involved an overseas expenditure of £1,381,000. Another interesting item is the £579,000 sent over&as for film hire and entertainments, a rise of £35,000 compared with the previous year. Travellers' expenses accounts for £1,735,000, and another £7,952,000 was expended to pay interest, dividends, legacies, emigrants’ funds and capital and private debts due overseas.

The remittances of American authorities and personnel amounted to a modest £30,000, compared with £4,458,000 for the year which ended March 31, 1945.
