No Equal Pay For Men, Women Yet
(Rec. 11.30 a.m.) LONDON, June 4. The British Government will not immediately implement the Labour Party conference’s decision directing the Government to put into operation equal pay for women and men says the Australian Associated Press. The Government will not even say when it might be implemented. An official spokesman said the reasons were:
(1) The effect on the exchequer at the present difficult stage of equal pay for Government employees. (2) Any Government agreement on equal pay would inevitably lead to equal pay for the whole of industry and in the Government’s view substantially increased pay packets would cause a dangerous inflationary process.
(5) Granting equal pay to wQinen would not have a compensating influence on production as industries in which shortages were most critical and which were most vital for the export drive—such as coal, heavy machinery, steel—employed no women.
