T'pungo-Glenbervie Roll Of Honour

“It is* a privilege to be able to hon our a section of our community by unveiling this roll in their name.” said the member for Marsden (Mr A. J. Murdoch) yesterday afternoon when a memorial roll was presented to the chairman of the Glenbervie School Committee (Mr R. W. Johnson).

The roll, bearing -the names of 33 men from the Tikipunga-Glenbervie district who fought in the Second World War. has been made for the local branch of the Women's Division of the Federated Farmers who wished to present it to the school committee until such a time as a suitable hall in which it could be hung was built. In a simple, dignified ceremony at the Glenbervie School the president of the women's division (Mrs H. Pawson) presented the tablet to Mr Johnson in recognition of the services of the men who had fought for the district.

Mr Johnson thanked the division and said that the committee would be glad to accqpt the responsibility of keeping the roll until a more fitting domicile than the school was built. Speaking on behalf of residents Mr H. Hutchinson said that they had good reason to be proud of servicemen from the district as they had done their utmost for the people and country.

He added that the women's division kept in touch with all the men by writing and sending food parcels. The residents were grateful for this and for the fine roll of honour. An apology was received from the Mayor of Whangarei (Mr W. Jones) who was unable to be present because of press of public business.
