Manpower Problem
The Minister of Works (Mr Semple) replied tod&y to Dr P. Dunsheath's questions as to why the Dominion did net proceed with the Maraetai power scheme at maximum . speed. Mr Semple said today that the plan was to concentrate on Maraetai which would add 203,000 kilowatts to the North Island output. “Whether we can take on any other work in the Waikaremoana area oi anywhere else in the North Island will depend on whether we have surplus men and materials after Maraetai is manned and supplied,” he said. Pie said the department did not have skilled men on tunm-i jo be to work 24 hours a day 'for seven days a week. \
Cn the Waikato job the department was unable to get strong young men to replace old tunnellers who had bar; their day. “Dr Dunsheath cannot be aware that factors holding us up in New Zealand are affecting every country in the world," lie said. "We have to train key men or we can't get on with the job even if we assemble enough men for other construction works."
