TRAFFIC CONTROL Dissatisfaction with the present arrangement for Whangarei traffic being controlled by officers of the Transport Department was mentioned by the Mayor (Mr W. Jones) during a discussion on traffic problems at the Whangarei Borough Council meeting last night. He indicated that he intended moving later for the council Jo again appoint its own traffic inspector. MUNICIPAL MILK

In its initial month of operation the Whangarei Municipal Milk Department handled 62 per cent of all retail and wholesale sales, the remaining 38 per cent being distributed by independent vendors. The department’s percentage represented 13,739 gallons sold retail and 4289 wholesale. In addition 942 gallons were distributed to the hospital and 2593 gallons to schools. These figures were given by the manager, Mr A. E. Sawyer, in a report to the Whangarei Milk Authority last night on the department’s April activities. GORSE COSTS £2O ACRE

A value ol £2O per acre for clearing land of giant gorse was named by a private valuer, Mr C. R. Birchall, in the Land Sales Committee sitting in Kaikohe yesterday. In the case before the committee, the contract included certain clearing work (mainly gianl gorse) to be dene by one of the two parties. An allowance of £5 an acre for the worst areas and £3 an acre for the rest was made by the Crown valuer (Mr J. A. Grist). Asked what he considered would be the cost of the clearing work, Mr Birchall replied £2O. Later, when Mr Grist suggested that fencing might be included in this figure. Mr Eirchall stated from the body of the court that he had mcanl to include only grubbing, burning, discing and ploughing. “People arc paying £2O per acre to have land ■ leared of gorse in Kerikeri now,” said Mr Birchall. “and it is a long time since they could have got it done for £ls an acre.”
