Dominion By August?
Reuter’s New Delhi correspondent learned that the British Government intends, in the current session of Parliament, to introduce legislation providing for the transfer of power to Indians in 1947 on the basis of Dominion status for the-one or two successor authorities. . It is further learned that attainment of Dominion status would be without prejudice to the right of the Indian Constituent Assembly to decide, in due course, whether or not tne part of India in respect of which they have authority will remain in the British Commonwealth. It is anticipated that India, by Ailguse, may be a fully-fledged Dominion. It is learned the British Government does not want to interrupt the existing Constituent Asembly’s work but wants to facilitate creation of another Constituent Assembly for such areas as are not represented in the present body.
When this is done it will be possible to determine the authority or author; ities to whom power will be transferred.
The correspondent added there is no reference to the word “Pakistan in the British plan to be announced tomorrow. A referendum will be taken in the North-West Frontier Province. The people of Sylhet, in Assam, will similarly be given an opportunity to decide whether they want to be Hindustan or Pakistan, Reuters correspondent said Indian leaders tonight were believed to be in substantial agreement on the British Government plan for of power. \ The general secretary of the Moslem -League (Mr Liqat Ali Khan) announced that the Moslem League Council is holding an emeigency meeting on June 9 to consider tlm British announcement of he plan for tiansfer of power.
