Tornado Flattens Town
(Rec. 10.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, June 1. While the 600 inhabitants of the township of Leedy huddled in storm shelters last night, a tornado flattened three-quarters of the town, killing six people and injuring 25. Leedy is in Oklahoma. “The tornado came roaring like a steam locomotive. It left half of Leedy’s population homeless and the business district a shambles," says a report from the town.
When the pastor of the local church emerged from the shelter he found his church had been blown away.
CAR SPUN LIKE TOP A motorist was seriously injured when his car spun like a top and rolled off the road. The tornado wrecked Leedy’s electrical and telephone systems and demolished the water tower, which crashed, with its steel legs twisted like a rope.
Meanwhile, two other tornadoes, following the path of the storm which killed 169 people on May 10, panicked two Oklahoma towns and one in Texas.
Townspeople dived for shelters or fled in motor cars, leaving their dinners half eaten on the tables. (However, these tornadoes did little damage.
