(P.A.) DUNEDIN, This Day. “It would not be fair to make a policy speech at such a gathering as this, but I can tell you that you may rest assured that the defence forces of this country will be brought up to the required standard to play their part in the Commonwealth defence scheme,” said the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones), speaking at the annual reunion of the South African War Veterans’ Association on Saturday evening.
"We owe a great deal to Great Britain, and we shall not let the Old Country or the Commonwealth down,” he added.
Mr Jones said that the occupation forces in Japan were doing a monotonous, but worthwhile task. Their efficiency had earned favourable comment from those in charge of the occupation of Japan, and the Dominion was being creditably represented by the J Force. _ “Of course, they grouse, at times, but what would the army be without, grousing ? ” he asked, amid laughter. “If you men went over there and saw how they were being treated you would say that you had all gone to the wrong war.”
