Mutton Shortage Acute In North
WHANGAREI butchers say that they will be faced with an acute shortage of mutton in about. a- month. The reason for this they say is that last year, when drough conditions prevailed throughout Northland, >3 farmers were selling lambs at prices up to 25/- a carcase.
Taking advantage of this high price farmers sold nearly all their lambs and kept only a few for 'breeding purposes, or as many as their parched pastures could feed.’ This has resulted in an acute shortage of wethers which is likely to continue for another two years in Northland. As' the few remaining young sheep which farmers considered they did not need for breeding, came on the market the position has steadily deteriorated until now local butchers
say that they doubt if they will have | any mutton to sell by mid-June, j Both butchers and stock firms have realised for some time that this sitj nation was likely to develop, but as ! yet have found no remedy for it. j It is general throughout Northland ; Beet however. is plentiful and I while butchers say that they arc not receiving sufficient supplies of veal and pork to meet the present demand they do not anticipate much trouble in filling the majority of their orders.
