WON OUT OF THE SADDLE

(10.30 a.m.) LONDON. May IG. Gordon Richards, winning on Mi. L. A. Abelson’s champion hurdler National Spirit in the Cosmopolitan Cup at Lingfield Park, was ofF the saddle most of the race.

National Spirit has virtually no withers. What there are extend too far back, making him almost a hunchback. The saddle consequently slipped forward to the horse's neck at the first bend, and for the last mile and a half Richards rode bareback, though he retained the stirrup irons.

Richards produced his usual vigorous finish. He said: “Did you ever see anything like it?"
