To Moke fighting Services Attractive
CANBERRA, May 16. From July 1, higher rates of pay will be introduced in Australia’s three fighting services. The annual cost will be £3.000.000. The object is to induce men to make the services their career. Details were announced today by the Minister of Defence (Mr Dedman). Recruits’ pay is to consist of 10 / - a day without deferment, in addition to rations, quarters and clothing, over a seven-day week. Minor recruits are to receive 8/6 a day for the first six months and 11/- a day thereafter. I Military efficiency, trade skill and good conduct are to be recognised in ! all the services by pay increments. : which in the Army will increase the I rates to 11/-, 13/- and 15/- a day for 1 privates. | provision is made for a clothing I maintenance, marriage and separation ! allowances, and for retirement gratu- ! ities of £360 after 12 years’ service and £l2O after six years’ service.
