King's Message

The following Anzac Day message from His Majesty the King was read by the Governor-General, Sir Bernard Freyberg, at the 11 o’clock ceremony at the Cenotaph, in the Auckland Domain, yesterday:— “On Anzac Day the Queen and I join with our peoples in Australia and New Zealand in' commemoration of all those who in two world wars laid down their lives in the cause of freedom. The end of hostilities has not brought with it any lessening of the efforts needed in order to build a new world amid the devastation and confusion which war has left in its train. May the valour and devotion of those of whom we think today be an everpresent inspiration to all who have to face the manifold problems of peace.” His Excellency has sent the following reply to the King:— “Your Majesty’s gracious message has been communicated to the peoples of New Zealand, its Island Territories and Western Samoa, who are keenly sensible of Your Majesties’ association with them in their observance of Anzac Day. “On their behalf I beg to tender grateful thanks to Your Majesties and a renewed assurance of their unswerving allegiance to Your Majesty and the Throne. They take this opportunity of expressing their determination to 'uphold the traditions of Anzac and to play their full part, as a member of the British Commonwealth of Nations, in the task of reconstruction which now faces the world.”
