Illinois Mayor Bars Robeson

(Rec. 11 a.m.) . NEW YORK, April 18. The Mayor of Peoria Mr Triebel, cancelled permission for Paul Robeson to sing in the City Hall assembly room tonight. The Mayor said his action was based on a state law authorising mayors to take steps to prevent riots and disturbances.

The American Legion had protested against Robeson’s appearance at the City Hall, on the grounds that he was “an advocate of Communism.”

Robeson had booked for a concert, but this was cancelled because of the poor bookings. His friends then arranged for a reception at which he was to speak and sing.

Previously the Mayor granted permission, but stipulated that if Robeson made any subversive statement the meeting would be closed immediately. Before the Mayor cancelled permission, Robeson had been threatened with violence, but said he was not easily frightened, and would appear “with adequate protection.”
