Stockmarkets Quieter Throughout Northland
WITH the approach of the slack seasonal period in stock markets generally, the tone of the market was quieter throughout Northland during the past week. In the Whangarei district this was fairly apparent in the store and boner sections, while further north conditions were perhaps slightly better.
With few exceptions yardings were j smaller than last week, and except in j beef and mutton sales, values did not i show an upward tendency. | In the beef sections, few fat cattle j were offered. They met with a fairly strong demand, with local butchers competing for good sorts, but with beef butchers still on strike at Westfield the cessation of killing in this section of the works meant that fewer exporters were operating at Northland sales. The repercussions of the Westfield difficulties are necessarily being felt at Moerewa where killing space has been severly taxed during the past
month and is likely to remain difficult to obtain for some time to come. The boner cattle market continues to be affected by killing space difficulties and few boners were sold in the yards. Paddock sales were mostly made at approximately schedule rates of 26 - per 1001 b. The boner market was by no means strong, but a slight improvement on last week’s values was detected.
Except in the Far North, store cattle were hard to sell unless they were well grown and forward in condition. Young steers fetched poor prices and the market was quiet in most places.
