BRITISH FORCES TO REMAIN IN GREECE
(Received noon) WASHINGTON, April 8. IT is authoritatively reported that agreement was reached between Britain and the United States yesterday lor British naval, military and air missions to remain in Greece, at least until the Greek Government’s campaign against guerillas m northern Greece has been completed.
It is hoped that order will be restored some time this summer, but it is possible that British forces may be needed in Greece for an even longer period.
The purpose of the continued stay will be to assist United States military and economic missions which will be charged with implementing President Truman’s aid programme. The decision to continue ihe Brit ish missions for a longer period results from congressional delays in Ihe passage of necessary legislation which now appears unlikely until the end of April. Political observers. however, arc confident that the aid bill will ulti-
mately be supported by a large ma. i jority of both houses. The President of the Senate (MiVandenberg) asked the Senate today to approve the bill to aid Greece and Turkey in order to prevent “a chain reaction which would threaten peace and security around the globe.” Mr Vandenberg said the plan was to underscore a principle long ingrained in the American character—nameely, to support free peoples who resisted attempted subjugation.
